Cupertino Residents worried about housing being built a mile from Apple campus

Original post made by Resident, Another Palo Alto neighborhood, on Oct 11, 2018

Vallco is being demolished. Cupertino residents are concerned that the housing that will be replacing it will bring more traffic to the area. Apple's new spaceship headquarters is in biking distance.

This is what planners are telling us to do, build housing near the jobs. So the question has to be whether the housing on the Vallco site will be expected to be filled with Apple employees who can bike to work?

And of course the burning question will be whether a bike bridge will be built over the highway?

I think this is worth watching, Palo Alto.

This is definitely worth thinking through particularly since Cupertino does not have a Caltrain or a BART. Will Apple employees move to where they can ride a bike to work?

This is Cupertino's problem not Palo Alto's.

If someone wants to bike all the way from PA to Apple HQ in Cupertino...dodging cars along the way and risking one's life and limb, so be it. Be sure to wear a helmet.

No need to make any concessions for these folks. As far as PA is concerned, employees at Google and Facebook can deal with these perils on their own as well.

A couple of years ago, Cupertino approved a new bicycle commuter plan that greatly expands their bike path system. Big improvements are already in progress. See the map on the city's website: Web Link

I think this article is about living in Cupertino and biking to Apple. Only an idiot would bike all the way from Palo Alto to Cupertino during busy commute traffic.

Besides, who cares about how bicyclists get to work at Apple? As you mentioned, it's a Cupertino issue to address not a Palo Alto one.

“Only an idiot would bike all the way from Palo Alto to Cupertino during busy commute traffic.”

I have done it for 38 years .... less a few sick days.
It has certainly gotten much more difficult with all the traffic, but in the past six years it is twice as quick to get there by bike than it is to drive.

The reasons for the opposition to the housing are really not clear at all.

This is not just about Cupertino. NIMBYs are fighting against new housing near jobs in Palo Alto and Stanford, too.

Who cares? Some will ride bikes and others will drive. Their choice.

Google and Facebook are the mega-employers around here. Their workers can either live in MP or MV if they want bike conveniently to work. They should find somewhere else to reside rather than PA. To hell with them and those bloodsucking developers.

NIMBYs unite against these newcomers. We were here first.
