A sexual assault was reported at Stanford University on Thursday night, the school’s Department of Public Safety said today.
The alleged assault happened around 11:30 p.m. involving a female and a man who are acquaintances, public safety officials said.
She described the suspect as a white man who was between 22 and 25 years old. He had brown hair, brown eyes, a thin build and average height, investigators said.
The incident happened on the west side of campus, where an alleged rape was reported at a student residence on July 19, according to the department.
Anyone with information on the reported assault is asked to call the Department of Public Safety at 650-329-2413.
Are the police not naming the suspect because they don’t know his name or because they don’t want to release the name for some reason? Are the police searching for a man matching that description or have they already questioned him?
Another incident where the victim was ‘acquainted’ with her assailant but didn’t know (or remember) the guy’s name.
The description of the attacker (white/22-25/brown hair and eyes/medium build) could apply to any one of a thousand potential suspects.

Suspect White male. That means nothing will be done… Who wants to bet.???? smh smh smh . Come on now, Its Stanford. This is what they are known for..
Why is this even in the news? No, they should not state the man’s name, vilifying on a he/said/she said. They were acquaintances, not strangers so there is no need to report this. We only need to know if there is a rapist on the loose, not all assaults between boyfriends/girlfriends, friends, acquaintances. Is there no other real news to report?
The frequency of these reports is highly concerning.
What is the reporting protocol? Is there an obligation for the authorities to report ALL instances of sexual assault to the public? It appears as though instances involving acquaintances are handled the same as an assault by a stranger. If I were the victim of such an assault I would want privacy. Is that just not an option?
This happens much too frequently. It seems that the slap on the wrist that Brock Turner received for sexual assault did nothing to deter on-campus rapes.
Rather, it seems that such a light sentence opened up a floodgate…
@Not Again! Brock Turner has nothing to do with this and his incident was a huge deal because of his status as a top swimmer and the heroes who chased him; it made a curious news story. Sexual assault occurs frequently, but is not usually reported by the news. We’d all be numb to it if every incident were reported. I don’t understand why this particular instance is being reported by PA Online. Is it simply a reminder to women to be careful out there? Stanford is a huge campus with many dark areas.
Brock Turner and the whole “bro culture” have everything to do with the expectation that there will be only token punishment if that.
Did you miss the recent articles on how common sexual harassment is for women entrepreneurs and workers, where female VC’s are harassed with impunity, where women pitching their companies to VCs are routinely harassed. Stories like that have been in the national media for at least the last 3 months.
The woman who was in charge of Stanford’s sexual assault complaints commission — sorry I forget the formal name — recently quit because Stanford is one of the very few schools to require a unanimous vote on every complaint so she felt there was a ridiculously high burden on women reporting assaults.
