Creating positive change doesn’t happen overnight. Just ask the seven Palo Alto residents who have been selected as recipients of this year’s Avenidas Lifetimes of Achievement awards for pouring their time and energy into projects designed to better the community.
Together, Ruth and George Chippendale, Dexter Dawes, Marion Mandell, Judy Sleeth and Carol and Terry Winograd have dedicated the equivalent of 312 years of public service to advocating for art in the classroom, providing nonprofits with financial expertise, caring for 20 foster children, supporting Palo Alto’s Sister City Organization, bringing Jewish and Muslim communities together and more.
Their persistence and unwavering desire to change the status quo has made an impact not only here but across the globe. To honor them, the nonprofit Avenidas and the Palo Alto Weekly will host a garden party at a local home on Sunday, May 21, from 3 to 5 p.m. Tickets for this public event are $75, with proceeds benefiting Avenidas’ programs for older adults throughout the area. I also want to congratulate Marion Mandell. Marion’s generosity has touched thousands of young girls and women’s lives through Girl Scouts. I will be forever awestruck with what she accomplishes at the Junior Scout Camporees, the Father-Daughter dances, sing-a-longs, and her work with the sister city program in Palo Alto. She is also the force behind the collection of donated soccer uniforms that are sent off to underprivileged kids in Oaxaca. She is truly an AMAZING woman!! I’m so happy that she is being recognized for all the work she does, tirelessly and with a smile! Thank you Marion, you deserve the recognition ten times over!!
The names on the picture above are incorrect. George and Ruth Chippendale are on the far right. They are an amazing couple who have stood up for social justice for years and years.
Marion Mandell has been a (volunteer) force in Palo Alto Girl Scouts for decades. A selfless person, most leaders drop out of the organization when their own girls graduate, but not Marion! She’s been an invaluable support and source of knowledge. And she’s still going!! Congratulations Marion, well-deserved recognition for all you have done for longer than I’ve been alive.
Truly a Well deserved recognition for Marion Mandell! I am happy to have known her via her association with Girl Scouts and I am constantly awestruck at her energy, inclination and selfless dedication towards Girl Scouts. She has been/is responsible and has lead many, many Girls Scout events. She is undoubtedly a great role model and a fine example of what Girl Scouts and Girl Scouting is all about.
