PAEA Baldwin goes after Dauber

Original post made by PAEA power unchecked, Another Palo Alto neighborhood, on May 24, 2016

PAEA President Teri Baldwin breathing heavily, singled out PAUSD board member Ken Dauber at tonight's board meeting, claiming that Dauber implied with his comments that PAEA was only after money and did not want to negotiate class size. Baldwin claimed that PAEA has opened up class size many times in the past, and then used her three mi Utes of Open Forum time to berate and accuse Dauber of misinformation, misleading, and discrediting teachers. She even said that PAEA cares about students, ending to thunderous applause from PAEA. This caused Board President Heidi Emberling to lecture the crowd about safe spaces, though she didn't admonish the crowd as much as Barb Mitchell did when Dauber was on the other side of the table. A literacy TOSA, who doesn't have her own classroom, said she needed to say something, so she said something. A parent from PTA said she wasn't representing PTA, called the raise small and said it didn't need to be commented on. Frequent speaker Mariaelena Gaona Mendoza drew attention to teachers singling out one board member, and to no applause. A parent, Rebecca, asserted that paying teachers more will lead to hiring more teachers. Dauber had an opportunity to respond that the contract not good for teachers or students and highlighted obvious false barriers to hiring teachers such as PAUSD's old-fashioned practice of not accepting online applications. He also warned that we could have hired 35 teachers with a 9% raise instead of 12%. Once Camille Townsend began to express her outrage, Dauber repeatedly asked Emberling if she could control the meeting. This is all factual. I invite any other viewers to correct the facts. I've glossed over the many comments that Townsend made against the newspaper, Heidi reading from her laptop, and many other quotes that all of you can add to this post.

"though she didn't admonish the crowd as much as Barb Mitchell did when Dauber was on the other side of the table."

When Dauber was on the other side and Barb Mitchell tried to create a safe space, he stood up and used his three minutes to affirm that applause was an acceptable form of free speech in these meetings.
Funny how it changes now he's on the board.

Tonight, Dauber affirmed that applause was fine with him. Make sure you watch the recording in a week or so. Dauber's behavior looks consistent. Try again.

Today's meeting became a circus with the out of control behavior of one of the board members and couple of teachers. I think that is okay not to agree with other board member, but definitely it is not okay to attack other board members in public. Camile's actions to humiliate Mr. Dauber were totally not call for. As board members they all have the responsibility to all act professionally and stop acting like that especially. Remember we are a model to our students. There were moments today when I felt that Camile needed a break to calm down and think about her behavior. I could also see that other board members did not agree with one member, but they were still in control. I am glad that this is Camile's last year. I think that being there for so long, gives her some kind of entitlement, or maybe she is just like me; I am quickly approaching the golden years and sometime my brain does not work as good as it used to, but at least, I am not a boad member.
Also, I hope later Mr. Dauber does not have to tell the rest of the board member "I told you so" when the economy goes down and drastic decisions have to be taken like getting rid of employees because we can not longer afford it the increase. That will be very sad. We have to think in the future too.

Ken Dauber asking basic questions of the board, of Glenn McGee, and calmly explaining his position was a breath of fresh air. We need two more like him to make this district legitimately great.
