It was a good weekend for Gunn seniors Gillian Meeks and Maya Miklos, who moved among the state leaders in a handful of events during the annual Stanford Invitational.
After clocking the No. 2 time in the state in the 3,000 meters on Friday, Meeks returned to Cobb Track & Angell Field on Saturday and finished fourth in the mile. Her time of 4:53.81, when converted to 4:52.11 for 1,600 meters, moved her to No. 5 in the state.
Meeks also moved to No. 2 all-time at Gunn with her personal and trails only Sarah Robinson’s 4:44.07 from 2014. Meeks moved ahead of Esther Berndt’s 4:54.85 time from the 1982 CIF State Meet. The previous best by Meeks was a 4:56.39 from last year’s state meet.
Brooke Starn of Monte Vista (Danville) won the mile in a state-leading 4:49.12.
Gunn coach PattiSue Plumer acknowledged that Meeks had big plans.
“Of course,” Plumer said with a laugh. “(Actually), the goal was to race well and break 4:55. Goal accomplished!!
After winning the 400 hurdles on Friday in a U.S.-leading best, Miklos also returned to the track on Saturday and finished second in the 400 meters in 55.74. State leader Kaelin Roberts of Carson won in 55.24.
Miklos moved to No. 5 in the state with her time, which just missed her own school record of 55.61 from 2015.
“I think both girls are very pleased,” Plumer said. “I think they did great.”
Menlo-Atherton senior Annalisa Crowe also moved among the state leaders after finishing fourth in the girls’ 800 in 2:12.52. She just missed her personal best of 2:12.17 from last year, which ranks No. 2 in school history.
Menlo-Atherton’s Kathryn Mohr turned in a season best in the girls’ pole vault as she cleared 11-6 1/4 to finish fifth. Erika Malaspina of Pacific Collegiate won with a 12-6 clearance.
The Palo Alto boys finished sixth in the 400 relay in 43.63 after running 43.43 in the prelims (Bellarmine was first in 42.17) and Paly junior Kent Slaney was 12th in the mile in 4:21.47. That time converts to 4:19.95 for the 1,600, just off his personal best of 4:18.55 from the CCS meet last season.
Slaney also ran on the Vikings’ 1,600 relay was was 13th overall in a season best of 3:28.19. Bellarmine again was first in 3:21.87 with Los Gatos a very close second in 3:21.88. Menlo-Atherton also had a season best, clocking 3:28.30 for 14th.
The Menlo-Atherton girls, meanwhile, were ninth in the 1,600 relay in 4:01.62.
Menlo School’s Robert Miranda reached a personal best in the mile run with a time of 4:25.30, topping his previous mark of 4:35.71. The clocking converts to a season-best time of 4:23.76 for the 1,600.
Softball
Castilleja finished off its two-day, four-game split at the NorCal Classic in Tracy with a 6-5 win over Waterford and a 13-9 loss in eight innings to Pacheco on Saturday at the Tracy Sports Complex.
The Gators (7-6) got two hits, including a double, from Megan Andersen in the win over Waterford. Castilleja managed just four hits and committed five errors, but got 10 strikeouts from Tara Thakurta.
In the second game, Abby Lowell had three hits and two RBI and Thakurta added a double among her two hits in the high-scoring loss as the teams combined for 22 hits and 22 runs.
