Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts formally announced Friday that Palo Alto High grad Joc Pederson will be the team’s every-day center fielder this season.

Roberts made the announcement as a way to deflect speculation that Trayce Thompson, acquired from the Chicago White Sox during the offseason, was being given a chance due to extended playing time.

Pederson told mlb.com that Roberts had given him the news before the opening of spring training.

“He told me that I was his guy,” said Pederson. “He just wanted me to be myself. He knew in the offseason I worked hard on the things I learned last year.”

  1. No kidding, Quibbler.

On another note: WHY all this talk about someone who is (1) a Dodger, (2) put up far worse numbers than a fellow rookie of the Class of 2015, Matt Duffy (who, as it so happens, is a member of the San Francisco Giants)?

    Enough. Already.
