Tenants file class action lawsuit against East Palo Alto's largest landlord

Three tenants who live in the Woodland Park Apartments in East Palo Alto filed a class action lawsuit on Wednesday, Sept. 3, against Equity Residential (EQR), one of the nation's most powerful landlords and the largest residential property owner in the city.

Have to wait to see what the legality of the specified practices might be--but the real estate company does seem to be a little bit hungary.

Not clear from the article, but it would seem only reasonable for the real estate owners to be required to have on-line account information so that renters could determine the status of their accounts.

Let's hope we get more information this situation as the suit progresses.

How many renters would pay their rent on time if there is a $.33 per day late fee instead of $50?

This is wonderful! This is the second local class action against this hideous thug landlords, and the third local suit. EQR had also inherited the wrongly accrued fees from Page Mill Properties, then into the lackadaisical, terrible management hands of Laramar/Wells Fargo, without the required paper trail, bewildering tenants. All of this, of course, was done under the leadership of Christopher Peter.

And here we go, on the opposite coast: Web Link To quote from the link: "In a stinging class action ruling on August 26, 2014, Boston federal district court judge Rya Zobel ruled that Equity Residential’s up front apartment fees are illegal under Massachusetts law. Even worse for the national apartment owner, the judge found the fees also violate the Massachusetts Consumer Protection Act which imposes up to triple damages and attorneys’ fees. With potentially thousands of affected tenants, Equity Residential could be faced with a sizable legal tab for this policy."

May justice prevail.

These are the despicable landlords with whom city manager Magda Gonzalez was colluding? She should be ashamed.
