Schadenfreude

Original post made by Poster, Old Palo Alto, on Jun 15, 2014

A small delight this morning just before noon watching all the illegally parked cars being towed. Provided chuckles for many bystanders and income for the towing companies. And maybe some fines for the city.

I don't know why watching a car being ticketed or towed would be considered a delight, and cause people anyone to "chuckle".
If this was downtown, the cost really hurts. Many of the employees in the local shops only make $10 an hour and it is more than a days pay.
I know some parents and families who drive their teens to work at the businesses downtown because there is no where safe for them to park which is close. You would not want your teen daughter going to empty parking lot at night by herself.
Often when people receive a ticket or are towed, they never return to shop/eat again downtown.
I don't think this is a funny.

I was referring to the cars illegally parked downtown in the area reserved for the World Music Festival, and should have mentioned that. There were signs everywhere forbidding parking during specified times, so no one had an excuse to park there. The operation took significant time, ample for anyone who just had a quick errand or a drop off to skid free. A car in the block that houses Cafe Venizia was there for more than 45 minutes, for instance. So I don't have much sympathy for people like that.
