Police arrested a 21-year-old Menlo Park man Wednesday after a shooting during a traffic altercation in the 1200 block of Willow Road in Menlo Park, police said.

A 24-year-old man was shot, and a Menlo Park officer was injured in attempting to arrest the suspect, police said.

Jaime Romero was booked into the San Mateo County jail on suspicion of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and resisting arrest, said Commander Dave Bertini of the Menlo Park Police Department.

Police were called at about 6 p.m. Wednesday to the 1300 block of Willow Road with a report of a man with a gun. Menlo Park Narcotics Enforcement Team (NET) officers were in the area on an unrelated case and attempted to detain the suspect.

“The suspect violently resisted efforts to arrest him, and during the struggle a NET officer sustained moderate injuries,” Commander Bertini said in a news release.

The officer was taken to Stanford hospital and was reported in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.

Several more officers arrived at the scene and found a 24-year-old man who had been shot at least once. The victim was taken to Stanford hospital and was reported in stable condition.

Officers learned that during or after the traffic altercation or accident, one man attempted to attack another with a baseball bat. The suspect, armed with a handgun, shot the victim during the altercation, police said.

Several people were detained and questioned to learn their role in the altercation, Commander Bertini said. There is no evidence that the incident was gang-related, he said.

  1. Exactly how would it being ‘gang related’ change any of the facts? Gang Related should not be a catch all phrase that somehow alters the facts.

  2. So there were 2 shootings in Belle Haven yesterday, one w/a suspected gang ties, the other unknown?

Who was wielding the baseball bat in the traffic-related shooting?

Very poor information in the above article.

  3. Thank you, Joe! It seems the info still isn’t clear. I do like the clarification between suspect Jaime Romero & cop Jaime Romero – I wondered if they’d mention that 🙂

How awful for the kids in lockdown & all other civilians around the area.

Traffic last night was terrible enough w/the Bay Bridge closure, then to add a shooting at a major thoroughfare – ugh!
