Lytton Plaza - Out of contrl

Original post made by Downtown Resident EM, Downtown North, on Dec 7, 2012

I was out enjoying a walk with my fiance this morning, and we wanted to stop in the plaza to drink our coffee. We sat down, and then saw a man pleasuring himself at a table across the way. We immediately left, and I just felt so mad.

Every time I go to the plaza these days, it's overrun by the crazies and the addicts. When is the city of Palo Alto going to do something abou this area? The plaza is such a great place to hang out, and I love the work that has been done to beautify it. Now, if only we could enjoy it, without having to subject ourselves to all the insanity going on there.

Ewww! I don't blame you for leaving. Hopefully there is no next time for that, but if it did happen, do call the non-emergency police number. They usually have a few officers right downtown, and they could have a "talk" with the offender.
I would be mortified if I were there with my kids and that happened!

That is pretty awful.

Not that this is anywhere close, but I was sitting on the sidewalk at Subway, enjoying lunch in the sun, and one of the crazies walked by and he smelled so bad, my lunch was not the same after that close encounter.

I didn't call the police, since it's not a crime to smell bad, but indecent exposure is. Maybe if you point out the guy the police could still arrest him?

So far, in my experience, the police will not come out and take a report for indecent exposure. However, if someone whistles or catcalls to someone indecently exposed, the police will come out and threaten that person with sexual harassment charges.

I had a one of the disgusting bums in front of Peet's downtown loudly hitting on me - haven't been back to that one since. Plenty of people heard him and when I was leaving and he started in again I was able to tell him to put it where the Pope won't rollerskate.

Next time, call 911. It's a sex crime. Newsflash - this is often how they move on to more serious sex crimes. Do us a favor and be more responsible next time.

I once read that the Boston Strangler started out as a seemingly innocuous peeping Tom...apparently it is true that marijuana leads to harder drugs, so why don't the cops take it seriously rather than treating it as something laughable that the victim should just ignore??

Lytton Plaza has all the charm of a brash, cold skating rink. BUT it was designed by an elite 'Blue Ribbon Committee". Yes, it looks stark, but it could have been designed with a warm Spanish colonial feeling - wrought iron tables and chairs instead of stark shiny metal, lovely street lights ala Paris or Valencia instead of brash hard fixtures, and that fountain that doubles as an outdoor toilet. It once had a pretty "floor". This one is stark and cold. Who planned this? It matches the "new urbanism'" building ideas that are being forced upon us and ruining downtown and other areas.

I knew there was a reason I never go Downtown these days. South PA looks better everyday.

Bob - For some reason, the ARB seems to think that most Palo Alto residents would prefer the stark over the charming (notice how many new building have bars resembling jails on the exterior). And our City Council gives the homeless more rights than the residents.

Why should we be surprised about the bums taking over the place? The city council is on the side of the bums. Resdents have no standing, anymore.

To "Why Bother" Can you give specifics as to the circumstances that you called the police and they wouldnt respond yet they did for cat calls?
