Stanford Math Circle Elementary

Original post made by Elementary Parent, Another Palo Alto neighborhood, on Aug 21, 2012

I was looking for ways to enrich my first graders math experience when I came across this: Stanford Math Circle Elementary (Web Link). It appears to be oversubscribed already as there is a waiting list. I would like to get feedback from people who have used this program. I don't particularly relish the thought of schlepping my kid over to Stanford and back, so I am trying to figure out if it is worth it. Thanks...

You might try Stanford's EPGY math program online instead. It worked for my kids, who were completely bored by PAUSD elementary school math. They were able to accelerate a couple of grade levels in the typical math path by the time they entered middle school.

@Mom: Thanks for the reply. I took a look at the EPGY website. It appears to be an acceleration program which seems to cover the same material they would encounter in elementary school at a faster pace. I was trying to find a way to introduce difficult puzzles, tricky problems, brain teasers. Stuff to get my kid excited about math. Its not clear EPGY would do this. Do they emphasize tricky problem solving?

You might try going to the Singapore math website and type "heuristic" in the search box. They carry books that introduce children to model methods and heuristic methods for problem solving. They also carry books with challenging word problems.
