A dramatic flood-control project that involves redesigning the Palo Alto Municipal Golf Course and building new levees and floodwalls between U.S. Highway 101 and the Baylands will be the subject of a public hearing in East Palo Alto tonight.
The proposal from the San Francisquito Creek Joint Powers Authority is the agency’s first major project aimed at calming the volatile creek, whose watershed includes parts of Palo Alto, East Palo Alto and Menlo Park. The project, which was the subject of an environmental impact report released in late July, targets the particularly vulnerable downstream area, which experienced major flooding in February 1998.
The creek authority includes officials from the three cities and from the Santa Clara Valley Water District and the San Mateo County Flood Protection District.
Tonight’s meeting will be the first of two scheduled to discuss the project and the draft environmental impact report. It will take place at 6 p.m. on the first floor of East Palo Alto City Hall, 2415 University Ave. The second public meeting will be held on Aug. 29 at the same place and time.
