This is just a one-sided account from a disgruntled former contractor. I'm not putting any credence into this until we hear more from from the other parties involved.
I'm sure this is one of those situations where there's more to the story than what's in the article. I would say that its "not cool" to discipline a grown adult in front of other people. Its very demeaning, and who knows - maybe she was texting about something that was urgent. In my opinion the proper course of action would ideally be to let it go, then talk to the person after class, out of ear shot of the other students.
I'm sure that's happened to all of us before - when some overzealous person calls you out, and its really an abuse of power. Of course, you should be respectful of the rules and guidelines, but things do come up.
The issue was discussed on the Ronn Owens show...Ronn, who is a moderate, felt the person should not be using a cell during a yoga class.
I think the employee was being disrespectful of the yoga teacher, fellow classmates, and the whole idea of a yoga class. It's like talking on your cell during music or other performing arts - it's really obnoxious and outrageous. Excuse yourself and go outside if you must use your cell. Turn it off when instructed to turn it off, also (planes, etc.)
She was not a Facebook employee--she was a subcontractor to a contractor-and can be let go for any-or no reason.
She was unwise to trash Facebook as she will never work for a corporate client ever again
She did get her 15 minutes in the news-that is it-end of story.
Tempest in a teapot. If the incident occurred as reported, the employee needs to grow a pair & suck it down - then take an etiquette course. If you need to violate the etiquette of a class, then don't complain when the person in charge gives you the stink eye. In fact, be a grown up & approach the person in charge after the class, apologize & tell them it won't happen again. If you can't promise that, then make sure phone is on silent & leave class before texting. Or take another class. Or use the pair you've grown & turn the phone OFF.
What's the deal with so many people thinking that they're divas who can behave that way? Being given the stink eye doesn't hurt, for pity's sake. Too much reality television.
The complainant was not a " student" she was a customer-
-Facebook was a customer of this yoga contractor .
The yoga contactor did not deliver acceptable customer experience nor customer satisfaction-
-therefore the contractor let the subcontractor go-and she is gone from any Valley corporation that values the customer experience-which we all do and should.
The negative publicity this one disgruntled yoga contractor has created will mean that NO Valley companies will employ any yoga contractor moving forward-
-if they have any sense.
Sharon appears to suffer from a similar condition as the yoga "customer" - a desire to overreact. These are the people that NEED yoga the most.
The yoga exercises where on company paid time-if any employee has an urgent email or text relating to company business then that takes priority over recreation-on company time.
Yoga is, in fact, a Hindu religious practice-
Some in the West treat it as a recreation-others as a Hindu spiritual practice-
Either way if it takes place during work time then the work takes priority.
It is unfortunate for this yoga subcontractor that she has made such a problem-
-she has seriously harmed others who want to sell the same services.
She clearly provided a very poor customer experience to the Facebook client.
The customer legitimately complained and the contractor appropriately fired the subcontractor.
Valley HR professionals will take serious note of this story and act to protect their companies interests by ending all yoga classes on company time and on company premises-- moving forward.
As Steve Jobs made clear-
In any market, the customer experience is a key success factor.
This yoga matter is a clear case of very poor customer experience provided by the vendor-
Has, the HR professionals I know were discussing this today on Facebook and laughing at how stupid it was. The instructor could have just received a warning.
In Sharon's "serf-and-master" vision, medeival management styles are all the rage.
The last thing the yoga cottage industry wants is scrutiny at this time give the current wave of financial and sexual scandals in yoga schools in NYC,LA and SF.
HR is there to serve the best interests of the company and its shareholders.
The CFO, the CEO, the COO, the head of Marketing and the General Counsel make the decisions in companies-
-after this yoga woman's public statements that damage the Facebook brand
The CXOs will tell HR-
-no more yoga on company time.
Also yoga is a Hindu religious practice which many feel has no place in American corporate training--
We personally think yoga it is harmless -
- but many corporate lawyers are very concerned about yoga on company time-believe us
