Teen Writing Contest

Original post made by Chris Zaharias, Crescent Park, on Nov 29, 2011

The Palo Alto City Library's 3rd annual Teen Writing Contest starts in two days, but prize money is vanishingly small. I don't know what the folks managing the contest think, but I for one would like to see 10X the prize money given out in order to better reflect the value of developing strong creative writing skills.

Thoughts?

Large prizes are out there for people who care to find them. This is a local contest, and a chance for kids to be recognized for their work. The writing itself and the recognition are the reward. Too much money can backfire for a CREATIVE endeavor, especially since these aren't starving artists who rely on the prize money to live. But if you think the pot is too small, I'm sure you could go to the library as an anonymous donor and make a contribution, but just realize you may have to make a multi-year donation, because it probably hurts the contest to have a wildly fluctuating pot year to year. Anyway, thanks in advance for your generosity.
