NO WAY to start your day...Scammers on the loose

Original post made by I lothe the scammers, Green Acres, on Jun 29, 2011

NOT a good way to start the day~ My phone was ringing as I was dusting off the fairy dust from my nights long sleep. I picked up the phone with a somewhat cheery "hello" to which I soon received a three hour ordeal.

On the other end of the phone a man was telling me that I just "won two and a half million dollars through the Publishers Clearing House's drawing!!". Blinking my eyes open a little wider, I was trying to make sense of what he was telling me...." We will be at your house within two hours~ we are calling early to let you know we are coming so you can dress nice for the camera and TV film crew that will be at your door!"

As the scam went on and on, I was instructed to go the Wallgreens store on Middlefield Road..I was asked for my cell phone # so that person could be sure I was there picking up a money pac to take to the bank with me..there was more nonsense to this, which I told him I had to hang up so I could go do as he instructed me to do. I then did hang up and proceeded to call the Palo Alto Police to report the scam phone call. They took my name and number to call me back as they had some kind of emergency at the moment. At that time I began to get nervous, thinking this scammer man might show up at my door. With balloons to boot. The scammer kept trying to call me back. I saw his number on my caller ID. I didn't answer my phone until I saw the City Of Palo Alto flash upon my message screen.

The policeman took down the information as I somewhat nervously repeated what all had taken place. I thought possibly that somehow the police could come out to meet the scammer at place and time and take this operation down. I was told that there has also been a few other calls that morning regarding the same m.o. and that I shouldn't worry~ to just tell the man that I contacted the police and not to call me back. Oh, easy for him to say!! I was upset thinking about the scammer. He did call and call and call my phone at least another 15 times within a half hour. I had put my answering machine on, which picked up his calls. Then, it finally stopped. He did tell me if I didn't have them come out within the two hours, that I would be forfitting the two and a half millon dollars...

Oh well. Just for awhile, I got to dream about being honored with more money than I could make in quite awhile...then reality set in again and I was making wrinkles on my face thinking about the others this morning who also woke up to this scammer breathing lies to them also. I did not see anything in the news about this, so thought I would write a little about what is going on in our never know~ your number could be next. Hope this wake up call will alert those of you who are trusting..............Signed, your neighbor around town....

My advice is don't answer the phone unless you recognize the caller. We've got caller ID too and it is wonderful! Sometimes we miss picking up a legitimate call, but they always leave a message so then we pick up right away and add their number in. If they keep ringing like that, you could always unplug your phone for awhile. Good that you notified the police.
