Does the PAPD have a facebook page?

Original post made by crime stopper, Downtown North, on Aug 14, 2010

Our neighbors at Facebook set this page up with a city in New Jersey: Web Link

Most of the postings by the cops are crime and arrest reports. The public can send in tips, etc.

The public can also post comments on police reports. The latest police posting is mug shots includes mug shots of a couple of teenage shoplifting suspects. There are a dozen comments from the public making fun of them.

People complain about government not being transparent and responsive to the public. Why doesn't the PAPD set up a Facebook page like this so we know what is going on in our town? Public involvement in the crime fighting process can only reduce crime around town.

Facebook is a local Palo Alto company. Why don't they help fight crime in their own city?

I doubt this was set up by facebook. I imagine that one of the techie cops did this. I also imagine any techie cop at PAPD or anywhere else could do the same.

Please don't suggest this, any IT this City invests in seems to cost them in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

What happened to Peak Democracy? It cost mucho bucks to set up and has now disappeared.

I like the story on their Facebook page about the guy who took a computer filled with child porn to a repair shop. The computer repair guy ratted him out and now he is facing 10 years in Federal prison.

I bet our friends at Facebook would be glad to set up the PAPD with something like this for FREE.

I respect law enforcement but there are plenty of people who don't. Apparently, at public PAPD meetings, they have a fair amount of citizens who attend to insult and complain. I'd be concerned that this negative feedback would occur on FB too.

Did Palo Alto just push out their city wide Facebook page? Some departments have FB pages, so I would not be surpised to see other departments like police and fire to step into social media soon. The adminstrator can decide how and if to allow comments to prevent too much abuse.
