A report released Tuesday (Aug. 10) by AAA Northern California shows that gas prices in the Bay Area and across the country are once again inching up.

While the national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline is $2.78, up 7 cents from July, Bay Area drivers are paying an average price of $3.27 per gallon, up 5 cents from July.

Statewide, the average price for a gallon of regular is $3.18, up 4 cents from July and up 13 cents from this time last year, according to the report.

Drivers in San Francisco and Pleasanton are paying an average of $3.27 a gallon, while drivers in Oakland are paying an average of $3.25 per gallon. In Concord and San Jose, the average price is $3.19 and in San Mateo it is $3.26.

Overall, prices appear to be going up and down, which AAA attributes to uncertainty in the economy and forecasts for an active storm season, which influence how investors look at oil as a commodity to invest in, according to the report.

  1. US gas prices are cheap compared to the rest of the world. US public transport is poor compared to the rest of the world. We should be charging a 50c per gallon tax to subsidise public transportation and that would benefit all of us. The more people who use public transportation, the better for all who use the roads. We waste gas sitting idling in traffic because public transport is poor.

Keep diesel prices without tax so that food and goods do not rise in price, but tax cars to cover improvements in Caltrain, VTA, BART, etc. etc., get one transport guru over the whole of the Bay Area and improve services.

The same should be said for all metropolitan areas over the US.

  2. When you add it all up-inflated military budget, occupation of other nations- just to name a few expenditures that help to keep “the cost” of oil down- the overall cost of gas/oil is more expensive than anybody will ever know. Wanna go swimming in the Gulf?

  3. Hawaii gas prices are still cheap compared to developed countries around the world. Gas prices in most of western Europe are above US$6.

  4. Denmark charges $10.00 per gallon and Britain charges $9.00 per gallon. Most of that additional is tax. That’s why so many Brits use public transportation, it’s cheaper.

If HSR is to be a success people have to use it and they won’t if gasoline in California stays so cheap. It will always be cheaper to drive a family of four to Disneyland than take HSR. Solve California’s budget problems by raising the gas tax. It’s OK the gasoline lobby is so powerful, it won’t happen!!!

Gasoline in California is such a bargain I don’t mind paying more.

  5. Regulated concessions are a nice way to make restrooms available. Give the Sea Scouts back their building and let them run a coffee shop. Move the golf course over to the landfill and make it 36 holes. Change the current golf course into a Goose petting zoo.
