Parts of state Highway 1 in Pacifica and Half Moon bay will be closed briefly today while the 2010 Amgen Tour of California cycling race passes through San Mateo County.

The California Highway Patrol will be assisting with the temporary closures as the bike race passes through the county between 11 a.m. and about 12:30 p.m., San Mateo County Office of Emergency Services spokesman Jeff Norris said.

The race will enter Highway 1 near the border of Daly City and Pacifica and will travel south on Highway 1 to Tunitas Creek Road near Half Moon Bay, Norris said.

The route will then turn onto state Highway 35 and will go south to state Highway 84, which the cyclists will take until Highway 84 connects back with Highway 1, according to Norris.

The cyclists will then continue south on Highway 1 toward Santa Cruz County, he said.

Road closures will precede the cyclists on Tunitas Creek Road and Highways 35 and 84 as well, but those roads will reopen once the cyclists pass through, according to Norris.

The 2010 Amgen Tour of California is from May 16 to 23 and is broken into eight stages, each covering a different portion of the state.

Today’s part of the race begins at Ocean Beach in San Francisco and ends 120 miles later in Santa Cruz. The first stage was from Nevada City to Sacramento, and the last stage will cover Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village and Agoura Hills.

  1. No, but the actions of a certain council member at the time, who felt the need to hog the spotlight, probably did not endear Palo Alto to the tour organizers

  2. I understand the race course changes each year just like the Tour de France race course. Have no idea what that writer means by actions of the city council. It was a very successful event. Appears some folks just want to be negative.

  3. The route does change from year to year, but interest and support from local communities does play a large part in determining the route.
