Former Palo Alto Mayor and longtime City Council member Gary Fazzino has been tentatively diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a “highly treatable” form of bone-marrow leukemia.

“But I’m certainly not at death’s door,” he said in response to some reports in the community. And “it’s not a final final diagnosis,” he added.

Fazzino, who has served multiple terms on the council since he originally hosted KZSU broadcasts of council meetings in the 1970s, underwent back surgery last week for compression fractures of two vertebrae.

“I’m fine, and am getting great treatment,” he said Tuesday.

He said he is feeling significantly better following the surgery after suffering serious pain earlier.

“It’s been a hell of a few weeks. I had excruciating pain for awhile, but am much better.”

There is “a strong possibility” the fractures may be related to the disease, he said.

Fazzino said that he also had pneumonia, apparently unrelated to the myeloma beyond inactivity and lowered resistance.

He said he is continuing with treatments for the myeloma, but has a positive outlook and knows people in town “who have lived 10, 20 or 30 years” with the condition. The medical literature agrees that it is “a highly treatable and increasingly treatable” condition, he said.

He said he is getting strong support from his wife, Annette, and “we have the best patient care anywhere in this area.”

He said he will continue working as vice president for government affairs at Applied Materials in Santa Clara, and expects to see their twins, Julia and Matthew, who turn 3 in June, graduate from college.

He also has another goal: “I still intend to beat Jim Burch’s record and be the oldest mayor in Palo Alto’s history.”

  1. Gary’s a towering pillar in our community and a major life force. Please take great care, Gary! We need you!

  2. I was never a political fan of his, but I wish him and his family the best, going forward. An autologous bone marrow transplant (FACS selected cells) worked for a friend of mine.

  3. I am sure with Gary’s magnificent sense of humor AND practicality, he will win this race…just as he has all of the others. He is my favorite political mentor, and I have always advised candidates to “talk to Gary”! His advice has always been courageous and honest.

  4. I recall one of my Jordon Dolphin friends telling me (a Wilbur Warrior) in 7th grade that he’s friends with “one of the coolest” people at Jordon. And 40 years later, Gary is still cool! I don’t think that Palo Alto has ever had a better Unofficial Historian, either. Take care and keep cool!

  5. Gary,

I hope you beat my record and then some! Wileta and I send healing blessings to you for a speedy recovery.

  8. Our prayers go out to Gary and his family – continued healing and a long and fruitful life. I’ve appreciated Gary’s wisdom in politics over the years in Palo Alto.

  9. Gary,
I am familiar with this disease and understand your pain and stress. Treatments have come such a long way. We WILL see you at your children’s graduations and dancing at their weddings.
Best to you and your family.

  10. Hello, Gary. I’d say “Go Blue Devils!”, but you know I taught at Southern and can only say “Go Owls!” In any case, keep your spirits up and all the best of our wishes from Portland.

  11. Hope you can soon say, “I am fighting the good fight and I am winning the race!” Best wishes to you and your family at this time.

  12. Gary – I wish you the best. Recover quickly – kids grow up fast and dad needs to keep up with them! Best wishes for your wife too.
