Palo Alto real estate developer, property manager and environmental activist Jim Baer is recovering from injuries sustained in a bike accident on April 3 on a Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Team-in-Training ride in the East Bay.

Baer, who was wearing a helmet, had fallen behind other riders and was found unconscious on the road by a passing motorist. After being treated for head trauma at Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, he is now in a rehabilitation hospital in San Jose.

According to friends, Baer is alert and talking, but suffered memory loss and has some cognitive and speech impairment that will require extensive therapy. Such symptoms are typical after head trauma, doctors say, and he is expected to make a full recovery over time.

Baer’s company, Premier Properties, manages many commercial properties, especially in downtown Palo Alto. He has been a frequent consultant and advisor to local development projects, including the recently completed new offices of the Palo Alto Weekly on Cambridge Ave., which is expected to soon become the first LEED gold-certified newly constructed green building in the city.

He founded Wave One, a non-profit project dedicated to helping small and medium-sized businesses reduce their energy consumption and become more environmental in their business practices. He recently spearheaded a renovation of Rep. Anna Eshoo’s district office to make it the first “green” congressional office.

  1. I would think he may have had a stroke. Seems consistent with the symptoms outline and may have been the reason he fell in the first place. I wish Jim a speedy recovery.

  2. I was very surprised to read this. I also wish him a full and speedy recovery. I haven’t always agreed with some of his work in support of housing developments, but he is an intelligent man who has done a lot for Palo Alto.

  3. Wow! I am so sorry for you and yours!

After spending time a Santa Clara Valley Medical Center myself, I recommend a room away from the busy nurses station where they are all frantic and over-worked and telephones ring non-stop.

Do not forget that there is always hope. It can be difficult, but there is always hope! And no matter how difficult things are, they always change into something else.

It will be for you to figure out what it all means. To bring whatever meaning you will find to what happened to this accident–and that can be priceless; will change your life in every way–almost.

But, I am so sorry for your pain.

  4. This is a tremendous setback for our community and for our region. Jim is a good man, a decent man, and a principled man, committed to doing good and giving back. The work he has led on energy reduction in the built environment is on the national forefront, has positioned Palo Alto as a real leader, and none of it has brought any personal enrichment to Jim or his company.

Jim, I’m wishing you a very speedy recovery. We need you back in the saddle.

Blessings on your family as well, and all those caring for you.

  5. Jim, our thoughts and prayers are with you. Don and I wish you a full and speedy recovery. Don’t rush back to work. The world will wait patiently for you.

  6. Jim, Jackie called to tell me about your accident. Glad to hear you are recovering and wishing you the best for a full recovery soon. I know you have a lot of family love and support. Hang in there and maybe you might want to think about some training wheels at your age-(just joking with you). We will be thinking of you.

  7. Jim,

My deepest prayers are with you. I can only trust that your generous and vibrant spirit will help for a speedy recovery. If it is possible, I would love to make a visit.

    With love,

  8. Jim:

JoAn and I send to you our wishes for a speedy recovery. We just heard about the accident. Since you are made of very tough stuff, and since you have accumulated, through myriad good works, abundant karma, the future is bright for you.

    All our love,

    Bill
