A Redwood City man was arrested for assaulting a police officer early Saturday morning outside the Pizza My Heart restaurant in downtown Palo Alto, police Agent Dan Ryan said.

A Pizza My Heart employee contacted police around 2 a.m. to report a dispute in the restaurant at 220 University Ave. involving a man who appeared intoxicated. The man — 38-year-old William Santos — allegedly started trouble while in line for the restaurant’s restroom, Ryan said.

A glass picture frame was broken in the hallway during the dispute, Ryan said.

The alleged assault on a police officer occurred as Santos and an unidentified male friend were leaving the restaurant. Initially, police attempted to restrain both individuals, uncertain whether both men had been fighting. Santos resisted and assaulted one of the officers by trying to place him in a headlock, Ryan said.

The officer sustained minor scratches and his glasses were broken during the scuffle. Santos was arrested for assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest. The man with Santos was released.

Santos was taken to a local hospital to receive stitches for a hand injury, Ryan said.

Fights at Lytton Plaza, located on University Avenue at Emerson Street, are a common occurrence on Friday and Saturday nights — sometimes even when police are present, Ryan added.

  1. Why are people fighting in a pizza restaurant? Can’t they fight in bars like normal losers? Is the pizza restaurant doing something that pisses off its customers?

  2. Before Twelve, Blue Chalk, Rudy’s, Old Pro, Pizza My Heart, Illusions, Dan Brown’s, Lytton Plaza(lol). That is all you hear on Friday and Saturday nights. 415’s, fights, drunks, tows, cabs, and DUI.

Perhaps these establishments should hire their own private Blackwater type force instead of leaning on the PAPD so much. Do these places really generate enough tax revenue to offset the trouble?

Almost none of the folks that are involved in these altercations are Palo Altans.

  3. Trust someone to always come up with the old ‘cop was harassing the patrons’ routine.

Yup. I agree. It’s getting totally out of hand. Seems wherever I go in Palo Alto to shop, a cop comes up and starts harassing the patrons!

Such a pity our PD has nothing better to do than pick out innocent bystanders and administer beat downs.

Next time I’m causing chaos in Palo Alto remind me to use this as my excuse.

  4. Hear! Hear! YSK. If the cops get into an altercation with someone, it’s a pretty good bet they aren’t innocent, well behaved citizens. Several years ago at my place of employment we called the PAPD because we had a one-day temp on the premises who was threatening and exhibiting pretty crazy behavior and wouldn’t leave. The officer who showed up demonstrated masterful people skills in getting the guy to leave, never was confrontational with him, and at the same time managed to get the message across that he should not return to our company. I was completely impressed.

  5. So someone is suggesting that the cops were harassing the patrons? Really? These guys were involved in an altercation in a crowded, public place. Personal property is damaged, and suddenly it’s the cops who created the problem. Like they should ignore what happened and just let the people go. They didn’t create the problem, they were simply reacting to it. Here’s a concept for you. Don’t get into fights and start problems and I highly doubt that you’ll have any problems with the cops. It’s called personal responsibility.

  6. most of time, cops arent doing anything to justify 6 figure salaries while there is no housing in supposedly greatest country in world! hypocrites…

  7. mosto: in reality, i venture to say that you know little or nothing about what cops do. i can say with confidence that what they do, you would neither possess the qualification or fortitude to even consider. as for this country, it is great because it provides everyone with an OPPORTUNITY to succeed. what people do with that opportunity is up to them.

  8. More than being less, Mostos comment is incomprehensible.

As to the six figure crack, gee Mosto, what’s it worth to you to go to work always knowing that in the back of your mind each day may be your last? That each day you may be putting your life on the line for some ungrateful loser who slams cops for doing their jobs then is the first person to squawk for help when their life is being threatened what I heard the most in regard to those Oakland officers that were murdered? People saying how the cops ‘harass them’ while they ‘don’t do nothing (anything) to stop crime anyway’. Apparently cops should be stopping crimes while somehow managing not to be diligent or hanfs on. The true genius of the Criminal Victim mentality.

    Ah yes, ain’t hypocrisy grand?

  9. Pizza my heart caters to the drunks on the weekends by staying open late. Add in the long lines for food and the long lines for the bathroom, it is all a recipe for a fight. The police show a presence and usually stay across the street until someone asks for their help or they see a fight.
