Not yet, the shooter is still at large.

oh my god me and my friends were at the park right next to the apartments! we heard 2 shots, and 2 guys that we know were outside at that moment!! we were really scared so we just went to our school, Terman. If we had arrived there like 4 minutes before, we would've seen what happened!!

the article says that they found him
what does it mean to be sought?

According to the automated phone alert I just received, they are still looking for the shooter.
a resident of Charleston Meadows
on Mar 18, 2009 at 4:43 pm
The auto-alert message system just called me with the following description of a possible suspect:
Hispanic male, 175 pounds about 6 feet tall, possibly wearing a white shirt and blue jeans, possibly armed
It also needs debugging -- the instructions to on what phone number to dial came out as "please dial September first one" instead of "please dial 911"

the cops didn't even search him if he has gun???..
a resident of Charleston Meadows
on Mar 18, 2009 at 4:51 pm
Bryan: The perpetrator eluded the police. They didn't get a chance to search him. It wouldn't be surprising if he promptly disposed of the gun -- it is evidence that he wouldn't want to be caught with, but he might still have it. We just don't know at this point.

I think he has been caught, because schools were let out of lockdown, and are never let out if the situation is not neutralized.
a resident of Gunn High School
on Mar 18, 2009 at 5:08 pm
Would there be a reason not to have school?
a resident of Gunn High School
on Mar 18, 2009 at 5:08 pm
they've told the kids at school that it's all right for them to go now. The guy was apparently not caught, but the area around Gunn is safe.
a resident of Charleston Meadows
on Mar 18, 2009 at 5:08 pm
I wish the auto alert message had gone out to residents sooner. Three-fifteen to almost five o'clock is too long if someone is eluding police and is on the run, a lot of ground could be covered in that time.
a resident of Barron Park
on Mar 18, 2009 at 5:08 pm
I passed the victim, sitting on the sidewalk, just as the paramedics arrived. He, fortunately, didn't look too badly wounded. On my return trip, the police were looking in all the bushes along El Camino and Arastradero, presumably for the weapon.

a resident of Barron Park

I second a review of the auto-alert system. Being told to dial "September 11" with any information on the crime is just ridiculous.

That's pretty creepy. I was making up a test today, and then when I was riding the bus home, I saw police cars around the apartment place. Then, a few minutes ago, I heard about what happened. CAHSEE might have helped some other Gunn students, but nah, I saw the police cars while taking the bus.
Kinda creepy though.

I just passed there 20 minutes ago.
Police still blocked the section of Maybell in front of the apartment. But all other roads are open. Briones School has been unlocked about one hour ago.

My son says the cops told him the suspect was inside the apartment building but that doesn't seem to be confirmed by outside sources. Can "at large" mean that they know the location but the suspect is still not secured/arrested/detained?
The Skelly call was useless as was the city phone call, not to mention too late.
a resident of Midtown
on Mar 18, 2009 at 6:16 pm
Katja, "at large" means the suspect is still outstanding. The police have some leads as to where he may have fled, but it is not in the area. The reason some areas are still locked down is because there were two crime scenes and the police have to gather evidence for their investigation.
a resident of Midtown

gun crime near a school means a special enhancement.
Why is the victim not cooperating?
Apart from the Burpee attempted murder this is not a high crime area, it did used to be a center of prostitution some time ago, has something changed?

[Portion removed due to disrespectful comment or offensive language] just becuase shootings dont happen very often here doesnt mean our daily routines need to be changed. get over it. it was gang related it doenst matter if they caught the guy stop trying to get involved.

Stupidpeople- In response to your post, this is our neighborhood as well, gang related or non, I pay taxes, i live in this neighbordhood, i contribute to our society and I to have every right to be concerned and to make it my deal. If it is gang related then we need to focus on showing these people to the door, because that behavior is unacceptable in Palo Alto, a place of education, academics, and civil minded individuals. We don't have to resort to gang banging violence in this town.

CAHSEE is the california high school exit exam--testing is going on this week.
stupidpeople- Even if shootings did happen everyday people would still freak out because its literally a matter of life and death. There is a man somewhere in the area that is armed with a deadly weapon.
Stay safe everyone.

suspect at large
a resident of Gunn High School
on Mar 19, 2009 at 1:06 am
"Suspect at large"- well, that makes things a little easier for the PAPD and other PD's in the area as they have by now an APB ( All Points Bulletin) out for this person- with a picture. It will be only a matter of short time (hopefully) that this will come to an arrest. Thanks PAPD for the squeeze of information for one not ready to cooperate.) Bad job, but somebody has to do it for the betterment of the masses.
The person not cooperating with police (even though he was shot and injured) is no doubt fearful of what reprecussions may happen to him if he is labeled a "snitch" for telling what happened to him and who did it.
He may be fearful of reprecussions on his family, or on his person- again. This is such a realistic jail house fear. Sometimes comes a reality.
Those who end up in this situation are hurting (some physically but some mentally as well.) Caught up in a situation that they never thought would happen to themselves (or their close friends)........surprise. Live by the gun and all the hard guy hype crap.
This fear has brought some back to reality and changed lifestyle..others remain in the dark place and .........(What outcome do they really suspect- immortality???)
Next time (especially you younger kids that are around people that posess guns) better think twice on the next person who may be on the receiving end of it. It may be you. Run. Exit. Get out that door. Use your head for something other than a hat rack (ever heard of that one?)

Many innocents are harmed by gang violence. People have a right to be concerned. It didn't happen by Gunn. It happened closer to El Camino. They know who the suspect is. It's just a matter of time.

The most worrying thing about this is that it happened at school commute time. If it had not been a Wednesday, more kids would have been on their way home from school, on bikes, walking or in cars. We always assume that the dangerous times to be out are when it is dark, not at the beginning of the evening commute.
We can't protect our kids by wrapping them in cotton, we have to teach our kids to be observant and stay away from anything that looks suspicious. Guns are always dangerous whether they are in the hands of a police officer or a criminal. The police walking around speaking to kids playing in a park while holding firearms is scary to say the least and certainly not comforting.
Palo Alto is becoming a more dangerous place, but so are other places too. It is a sad state of affairs that we have to teach our kids to be so street savvy when they are coming home from school.

Resident says,
"It is a sad state of affairs that we have to teach our kids to be so street savvy when they are coming home from school."
I really think this is something that parents should teach their kids regardless. I know that when the time is right I am going to have a long and serious conversation with my kids about being aware of their surroundings. It's simple self preservation.

The very sad part in all this is I really doubt PAPD's affectiveness of catching this LOSER. I know who this guy is and know of numerous people this LOSER had harmed or attempted to harm. About a year ago a young man was driving into his driveway on Curtner and was shot at all because the victim ( in this incident ) sister was supposibly talking smack about the LOSERs girlfriend. He ( LOSER ) sat lie in wait for the big brother to come home from work then opened fire on him while he was in the car. Fortunately he was not hit but was extremely shaken obviously they moved from the Curtner area a couple of weeks later. Then attempted to have another young man and his friend " claim " gang affiliation and when they refused to he lifted his shirt showing the gun tucked in his wasteband wasnt until someone else branished a much less lethal form of defense that he left but then found the person later and beat the crap out of him and his car breaking his arm/wrist. I was very happy when I moved my family from barron park neighborhood until I ordered Pizza one day and he showed up delivering it. What about the fact that he is 19 and his girlfriend is only 15 what happened to that set of charges. Do the police not protect young girls anymore? I will feel so much better when this LOSER is off the street.

So, does anyone know why it took the police "phone tree" until after 5pm to alert people that there was a criminal wielding a gun and still at large who had shot someone shortly after 3pm? I received a phone call from the district before the police called. Seems like that phone call should have come in long before 5:00 given that we all had our children out playing after being released from school early.
