A major power outage of as-yet-unknown origin darkened a huge area of Palo Alto at about 6 a.m. today, leaving residents groping as they got out of bed for work or school.

“They’re still trying to figure it out,” police Agent Dan Ryan shortly after 7 a.m. said of Utilities Department crews. He said initial reports indicate the outage has affected much of the eastern and southeastern part of the city.

A Utilities dispatch recording said the outage may have originated in the Colorado Avenue area but said residents would have to call back “in an hour” to find out more information.

  1. In a notification like this, I think a good local paper should provide named boundaries of the affected area, by map or street names.

  2. I saw a flash and heard a loud humming noise at 6 am, and the rest of my family was awakened by it also. We live near Colorado and Bryant.

  3. Well, it turns out a duck flew into the power line. If there was a flash that doesn’t appear to be good for the survival of the duck.
