A pedestrian was hit by a car shortly before 11 a.m. today at California Avenue and Ash Street in Palo Alto, but initial reports indicate he was not seriously injured.

“He was up and walking around,” Palo Alto Police Agent Dan Ryan said.

Police are interviewing witnesses to determine details of the crash and whether a citation might be issued.

  1. I am glad to see the newspaper call these incidents “crashes” and not “accidents”. “Accident” implies no fault, which is not the case if the crash was caused by negligence.

  2. California Avenue is a traffic nightmare, particularly at lunchtime. There needs to be a strategically placed signal to make walking and driving safer. I am surprised there are not more accidents of this nature in this general area.

  3. People need to stop acting so entitled crossing the street.

Not saying that happened in THIS case, but I see it all the time.

People moseying across the street at the average speed of land turtles!

Just the other day I was coming up on a red light and watched in disbelief as a young mother with her 6(ish) year old kid step down off the curb to cross without even a GLANCE in any direction to check for safety. Cocky and stupid. How did she know if I saw her? I know she had to hear a car coming, mine is not a quiet vehicle.

Right of way does NOT mean a guarantee of safe passage. Look BOTH ways before crossing and move your ass, it’s an intersection, not a park trail! Think of it as a videogame where you have no lives left and have to make sure that you are not taken out by the 3000 pound object that is hurtling your way!

  4. Car drivers in a big hurry should use the parallel streets like Cambridge Ave. or Sherman Ave. to quickly get to and from El Camino. That’s where all of the parking lots are anyway.
