While adults are lining up today to cast their votes in the presidential election, some students are, too.

JLS Middle School students in Palo Alto are holding a mock presidential election.

According to Carrie Manley, parent of a sixth grader, the students even had to “register” to vote in the last few weeks leading up to today.

“Students are lining up at the library, interest is so high in getting to vote,” Manley said. The school has held mock elections before “but no one there recalls one that has generated so much interest.”

The results will be announced Wednesday morning. More than 900 students attend JLS.

  1. Teaching democracy in public schools is clearly a conspiracy by liberal activists to destabilize our government. Everyone knows that young intelligent voters favor the Democrats by a large margin. Encouraging young people to vote when they turn 18 creates many more Democrats than Republicans. Teachers should keep politics out of public schools!

  2. My 8th grader told me that he would be home late today because he had to vote at school and then vote again at Mitchell Park. This was the first I knew.

Is it teaching them it is ok to vote twice? Are they voting for the President (and how many candidates) and are they voting for the propositions too?

I have no problem with this, but I think it would have been interesting for this story to have been posted before today to give us a better opportunity to talk to our kids before they ‘vote’.

  3. My child has been talking to me about the JLS vote for quite a while. He was so excited about it. I know he discussed the election and ballot measures with his friends and was eager to vote. I think it’s great that JLS put on a mock election. Well done Dave Tomatis, and JLS staff. You are wonderful, as always.
