Memorial service set Sunday for Paly student Travis Brewer

Original post made on Sep 16, 2008

A memorial service will be held Sunday afternoon for Travis Brewer, the Palo Alto High School sophomore who died in his sleep Sunday night or early Monday morning. Brewer, who friends and coaches say inspired others with his friendliness, honesty and upbeat outlook, will be remembered at 4 p.m. on Sunday at the Paly gym.

To the Brewer family: We are so sorry to hear about Travis. We got to know Travis back when my daughter Jenice was at Jordan playing volleyball. She played with his sister, Sisley. Travis was with his mom at every game. He was a sweet kid, fun to have around. My daughter Jekara, also a coach at Paly high saw Travis just last Friday and he was his usual sweet, cheerful outgoing self. He was a great kid and will be missed!

To Bruce, Becky and family. Although we are family separated by a few miles, I want you to know that you are in my family's prayers. We have not seen Travis since he was roughly 6 or 7 but knowing that God gave him an opportunity to make his mark on the world until the tender age of 16 fills my heart. He will be missed here among us, but trust that he has even greater works to do above! Love always, your cousin Sonja

Tony, Becky, Gabe, & Sisley,
Our hearts go out to you all. You are all in our prayers. Travis was an awesome kid from an awesome family. What a blessing to have had such a wonderful person as part of your family. His spirit will truly live on.
I will miss his big smile and him always going out of his way to say hello to me.
His passing has touched our family deeply.

God Bless You All.

I will miss that big smile and warm spirit that "Big T" brought with him everywhere and for everybody. He was a fixture in the Jordan PE Dept, at PALY Athletics and he was always willing to help.

Our thoughts and prayers for Tony, Becky, Gabe and Sisley and the many friends and family that miss him greatly! I know the gym will not hold enough people on Sunday that want to say goodbye to such a special person!

Your teacher and friend,
Mr. "D"

Travis attended school with me at Walter Hays since fourth grade. I remember he was always in my PE classes with that big goofy grin of his. I'm not sure I ever saw him not smiling. Though I didn't know him too well, I will always remember seeing him around school with his scooter, high-fiving kids as he passed by. Travis had more friends than many people may have in a lifetime. There are so many people who have been deeply affected by this tragedy and the Brewer family will be in all our thoughts. We will not forget.

My thoughts are with you,

My heart goes to you who cared for all our children at Nixon. I pray that your devastation will someday be consoled by the memories of his beautiful face and the blessings of having had him even for such a short time. I wish you courage through those difficult times.

I'm so glad for the opportunity to have met and loved Travis as a part of our family. Although we don't see each other often, know that you all are in our prayers. I too enjoyed Travis's outlook on life and never remember a time he did not have a smile on his face or was cracking a joke about something. This was definitely unexpected but God has greater plans for him now. Take care and God bless.

Your cousin, Yolando

Hello Bruce and Family,

This is Vanessa, your cousin from Dallas. Your Aunt Robbie's daughter. We send our deepest condolences. We will be praying and knowing that God will see you through this season in life. I know it is hard and my heart bleeds for all of you. Remember in all things God is Faithful and from the article your baby lived life and did not waste his precious time. For that we are grateful. Much love and we pray to see you guys soon. We are praying for your peace in the midst of this storm. Be blessed!!!

Tony, Becky, Gabe and Sisley,
We had many wonderful years living next door to you -- and many memories of seeing Travis' smile on a daily basis.

He was a beautiful baby -- always smiling, always happy.
At Halloweeen, he'd come to our door -- costume and all plus his big smile. Just so many memories of seeing him as a baby and growing up...

Our hearts are heavy for you -- please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you all. And while we are just a skip and a hop away, know that we will always be here for you.

Much love,
Yoli and Loren

Dearest Becky and family,
Our thoughts and deepest sympathy are with you during this horrible time. Becky has always given a warm welcome and helpful hand for our daughter at Nixon School--thank you. We were heart-broken to hear of your tragic loss. Three years ago, our son Aidan died. There were few people who could really relate to what we had to go through, either immediately or for the next several years, but we did find comfort and support through The Compassionate Friends. (Web Link They are a special group who are dedicated to helping families survive the loss of a child. There is little anyone can say to ease your shock and grief, but please do know that you are not alone, that Travis and your family are in so many people's thoughts, that Travis's memory will live on as long as you do, that you will feel happy again, and that happiness will be OK. Much love, the Vriens family

Dear Becky,
I enjoyed sitting with you at practices and games when Alex and Travis played baseball togehter. We were all touched by Travis. He was a sweet guy with a ready smile and quick wit. Alex and Traivs were at Hays, Jordan and Paly together. Travis was so sweet to Alex's little sister, Kira, he was such a happy guy making us all smile and laugh. We are so very sad and just not ready to let go of him. Our hearts and prayers are with you and your family.

Hello Brewer Family,
I was shocked by the unexpected news. Travis was just a young kid when Tony was coaching me in American Legion in the late 90's. Even in "heated" Gunn vs Paly games I would always go out of my way to say hi to Tony. I didn't have the pleasure of knowing Travis personally as a young man. However, there's no doubt in my mind that he possessed all of the outstanding traits that his parents were both blessed with.
I am so sorry for your loss. I have thought about your family all week...
