Beijing takes dog off the menu for Olympics

Beijing has asked hotels and restaurants in the city to take dog meat off the menu for the duration of next month's Olympics and September's Paralympics.

Dog is eaten not only by the large Korean community in China's capital but is also popular in Yunnan and Guizhou restaurants.

A directive from the Beijing Food Safety Office issued last month ordered Olympic contractor hotels not to provide any dishes made with dog meat and said any canine material used in traditional medicated diets must be clearly labeled.

Does this apply to hotdogs?

I wonder if they are also monitoring the sale civets and the other wild animals that caused the SARS epidemic a few years ago.

It would be a disaster if infection broke out with so many people from all over the world just a plane ride away from spreading any epidemic globally in hours.

So, they’re not going to be wokking the dog. Cats are the other white meat, and they are definitely on the menu in some upper-echelon Beijing restaurants.
The southern Cantonese diet is quite “diverse” when it comes to other kinds of animals; it would not be edifying to go into further details.

That being said, put your coffee cup down, make sure you’ve recently relieved yourself, sit down out of yakking range of your keyboard, take a deep breath, and then Google Beijing’s fabled Guolizhuang Restaurant.

A “guo” is Mandarin for the Cantonese word “wok” so this restaurant’s name would be “‘strength’ (heh-heh) in the wok.”

The real question is how tourists are going to cope with Chinese squat toilets. Some places have western ones, and some do not.

This may be true, but even in China a penis restaurant is unusual. The Guolizhuang restaurant opened two years ago on the aptly-named Dongsishitiao Street. Word quickly spread among well-heeled Chinese, and today there are five franchises. The chain is even expanding outside of China — into the Chinatown in Atlanta, Georgia.

Aside from the phallic delites, perhaps the doggie menus gives us hope about off leash pooches in Palo Alto.

A vegeterian from India would consider eating beef to be gross. Its a matter of perspective.

The only time I ate dog, it was prepared and served by a French chef [BFONU, Feb '51] - It was better than the ox we had been served the previous day.

They breed puppies to eat since their meat is tender.

Wild dogs roaming in the roads are shot or beaten to death since they are considered dangerous and rabid.

Although horrible to witness, wild dogs are nothing like the dogs we have here.

I think Vietnamese and Burmese may also eat dog, although they will never admit to it once here. They know what to say and practice this before their interview with immigration (at least as refugees) before they are allowed to immigrate.

I know that many restaurants serve dog in the US. Many markets sell dog too.

You must speak and read the language, or speak with the chef.

Dogs are bred here by these people, to be sold as meat, and served at restaurants in the US.

If you live over there for a long time (not a student exchange program), and learn the language, you will learn more than you care to know. When you come back here, you will see immigrants/refugees doing the same, but they will never fess up unless you are totally fluent and they know you understand their culture.

I wish that they would crack down on these puppy mills here.

In Asia, nearly every creature is trapped and eaten - even sparrows.

There is always the local MeDonald's or Kentucky Fried Chicken.
I had a manager from Shanghai today with me, and I had to help him order from our corporate cafeteria. He was shocked at Provolone cheese and I had to help him order.

This discussion is getting silly. Cultures are different and what people eat is different, the perspective is what makes it shocking. How about all those young calves bred for meat, or those baby lambs, or the fluffy chicks that grow into chickens.

Meat is meat and if it is farmed and treated humanely, why shouldn't different cultures eat different meat. The French eat horses, the Aussies eat kangaroo. Indians are shocked that we eat beef, to them the cow is sacred. Jews won't eat port or shellfish.

Unless we plan to be vegetarian, we should allow the different cultures to eat what they chose. If there is animal cruelty involved then that is another story, but if the meat is bred humanely, then we should not throw the first stone.
