More than 100 volunteers recruited by the Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society turned out for the Palo Alto Christmas Bird Count Monday. So far they tallied about 160 species and more than 14,000 individual birds.
The count is part of an annual effort to document changes in the bird population. The event runs nationally from Dec. 14 through Jan. 5. Final results of the national count will not be available for some time, and the local estimates are highly preliminarym according to Bob Power of the Audubon Society.
The Palo Alto count extended from the bay to the west side of Skyline Boulevard and included a variety of habitats and a diversity of bird species, according to the organization.
Power said each counting area is a circle 15 miles in diameter.

Great photos, Norbert! I enjoyed our time together. The Palo Alto Christmas Bird Count had an unofficial total of 163 species yesterday, slightly below average.
