Bikes without lights

Original post made by Parent, Another Palo Alto neighborhood, on Nov 5, 2007

I have just returned after driving my kids around. It is now getting dark while kids are still coming home from school sports, after school activities, etc. and I have seen many kids on bikes with no lights. Some don't have reflectors either. They are still weaving on and off the sidewalks, riding on the wrong side of the road, not stopping at stop signs, all bad things to do at the best of times, but in the dark it is crazy.

If your kids must ride their bikes in the dark, and I don't see why they shouldn't if they know how to ride in the dark, then they must be well lit. It isn't just a matter of what the law says, but they must be seen. Front and back lights are a must for safety reasons.

Please, before there is a tragedy.

A solid white headlight and a red rear reflector is what the law states.

PAPD cracks down on those without it seasonally.

A rear reflector maybe all that is required by law, but a light is better. A reflector can only be seen by car's headlights, a light can be seen by another cyclist, pedestrians, those about to turn into the street from an intersection, etc. etc.

My son was riding his bike in the dark to school last week. This week it is daylight again, but remember the schools have classes and sports before regular school time, so there are kids on bikes very early. They also need to have lights on their bikes.

Thanks for the reminder. Also, please remind kids to stop at stop signs while bicycling. I ride my bike frequently in Palo Alto, and I'm amazed at how many adult bicyclists as well as kids just sail through stop signs when there are cars present, causing near collisions. As adults we need to model safe bike riding ourselves.

There are a lot of inexpensive but bright lights available these days. Just be sure your kids take them off the bike and put them in their backpack when the bike is parked at school, or the light may not be there at the end of the day.
