Could it have been thunder? There was intermitent thunder and lighting last night, which could also explain the brief power outage.

Lightning or a blown power transformer? Those would explain the clock.

There was a power outage around 3:30AM. Parts of the street lighting downtown were out for a while as reported to CPAU from PAPD. They reported it as lightning, but I saw no flash or heard any thunder. It may had been the first rains causing HV to arc over on dusty insulators.
PAPD was dispatched to several homes because of false alarms cause by the power blink.
We had about 30 seconds of power out here. No problem for me as my home floats across lead acid. ;-)

HUGE thunderclap in Menlo near downtown Palo Alto a little after 8:00pm last night. Unbelievably close and loud. Anyone else hear it?

Don't know about the time, but we heard one really loud clap of thunder and the rain on the roof of our eichler was noisy. We also heard many helicopter and heavy aircraft noise last night. Very noisy evening!!
