Well, it seems that Stanford wants to compete as a shopping centre with Santana Row and Valley Fair. I don't shop at these malls, but if Stanford wants to get me and other locals to shop with them, then they should be thinking of competing with San Antonio, the new Charleston Centre, Costco and EPA. I don't shop in Palo Alto and my neighbours don't either because there is nowhere in Palo Alto that sells what I need to buy. How about Sears moving from San Antonio, they could be offered space at Stanford. What about Kohls, they advertise round here, but I have no idea where there is a store. What about staples, a good office/school supply place would be a great idea.

That will never happen--those kind of stores were pushed out of the Stanford Shopping Center years ago.
Stanford wants to cultivate an upscale image--there is no place for a Sears, Kohls or Costco I agree withyou about not shoppingin PA--I also do most of my shopping outside of the city because that is where i find what I need to buy.
The city council and chamber of commerce can run "shop in PA" campaigns until they are blues in the face--unless we have stores that people can find ordinary goods at--not like Tiffanys, Neiman-marcus etc--locals will do their shopping in neighboring cities.

Palo Alto Friendly to developers? Palo Alto is a city run by developers and their friends. They have to be Palo Alto developers. The Alma Plaza was taken over by a Palo Alto developer after Albertsons was "run-out" by friends of the Palo Alto delevopers or developer. There were only about 30 neighbors of the Plaza that objected to Albertsons. This was probably a long planned take-over. The first thing that should be done, regarding the Stanford Shopping center and the hospital is the extension of Sand Hill Rd across El Camino to Alma. The way it ends now is rediclouse (sp)...

Also Stanford should build housing suitable for all the employees at the Shop-center and at the University. They have plenty of land. It's development is opposed as it's not owned by the "right" people/developers. (GreenBelt Alliance developers/attorneys). You know, of course that Greenbelt Alliance is a group of developers/attorneys that want to build super-high density/high rise buildings through-out Palo Alto and other cities in the valley.

The city developed the little bus sys to bring shoppers to University Ave stores,etc and probably costs the taxpayers a million a year to operate. It also allowes workers in downtown to park in residental neighborhoods and take the bus, free. It should be extended to run to the SanAntonio shopping center in Mt View. 'This would dramatically reduce car traffic on SanAntonio Rd (sp,again) . Need active petition gathers in S.Palo Alto...

Maybe I am glad that city council members want to have more hotel rooms at a bigger, shinier, boutecky (?) Stanford Shopping Centre. This way, maybe there will be someone to shop and bring in some sales dollars to our only real shopping centre. What they are proposing means that the fact that Palo Altans shop elsewhere doesn't matter. We can continue spending our sales tax improving Mountain View and Menlo Park.

All of the jobs now at Classic Hyatt (bus boys, waiters, gardeners, cooks, maids, car attendants, managers, nurses - and all of the jobs, hourly and professional, at Lucille Packard and at Stanford Hospital AND all of the jobs at the Stanford Shopping Center now and in the future are/will be within the city limits of Palo Alto. That is not 'Stanford". It was all annexed to Palo Alto years ago. It will, however, seriously impact the infamous jobs to housing imbalance and quotas for new affordable housing imposed by the State and administered by ABAG, the Association of Bay Area Governments.

Simon Group when questioned about the housing issue indicated that it was not appropriate for the site or the) All of these people working now and in the future west of El Camino cannot expect Palo Alto to house them east of El Camino. Our schools are bursting at the seams and our commute traffic is a mess. The City should head off this possible future problem before it gets started. It's time for the cities to tell the State and ABAG that the cities know what is good for their residents and their quality of life. Enough already.

Carol, there is a beautiful Kohl's on East Hamilton off of Highway 17 in Campbell. Across the parking lot is a huge Bed, Bath, and Beyond. It is 'rumored' that Kohl's is looking at the new Charleston Center across from Costco in Mt. View. I can only hope.

To get to Kohls, and not during commute traffic, take I-280 to Highway 17 and go one mile west and turn at the next off ramp to Hamilton. It's right there. You can't miss it and worth the trip.
