Kevin Ashworth scored two goals and Adam Zernik assisted on both as the Palo Alto boys' soccer team took an early lead and held on for a 2-1 win over rival Gunn in a SCVAL De Anza Division match Friday at the Mayfield Soccer Complex. The Vikings (3-1-1, 8-1-5) grabbed a 2-0 lead on the Titans (0-5-1, 4-8-1) but the outcome was in doubt to the very end. Gunn was the aggressor in the second half, pulling to within 2-1 on a goal by Calvin Parshad. The Titans had a number of other opportunities, the best one coming when Sterling Hancock hit the crossbar on a free kick in the final five minutes of the match. Paly junior goalie Peter Johnson made a number of key saves in the second half to preserve the important win.
