The Menlo-Atherton boys’ water polo team hosted San Ramon Valley on Saturday afternoon in a rematch of the opening round of the NCS-CCS Challenge a week ago. In the prior match San Ramon came out on top in a 12-8 victory. According to Assistant Coach Dante Dettamanti “the boys played much better than last game and Marco (Coach Palazzo) had them much better prepared”. The Bears came out firing and took a 3-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Wolves from Danville fought right back, outscoring M-A 5-1 in the second and taking a 5-4 lead into halftime. Sophomore Morgan Olson-Fabbro tied it up in the third off an outstanding pass from teammate Evan Navarro. The difference stayed within a goal the rest of the way and looked headed for overtime when San Ramon scored in the last minute of play on a defensive mix-up, to come out on top 11-10. The key to the game might have been in the penalty category as San Ramon drew 8 ejections on the Bears and converted 3 of the resulting power plays. M-A did not draw a kick-out until the final period and only scored on 1 of the 3 opportunities.
Despite the result Coach Marco Palazzo was pleased with his team’s play. “This was our best game so far. The boys are responding better and better using our offensive and defensive systems. Now we have to get ready for Menlo”, referring to next Wednesday’s league match with their cross-town rival at M-A’s Spieker Pool at 4PM.
Olson-Fabbro led the Bears in scoring and assists with 3 and 2 respectively. Graham McClelland added 3 steals to go with a lone goal. Navarro had a great all-around game with 2 goals, 2 steals and an assist. Nick Henze added 2 and Zach Deal and Max Wilder had solo scores each. The solid play of junior goalkeeper Alex Gow kept M-A in the contest as he turned away 13 San Ramon shots, compared to 3 saves by the Wolves goalie. Nick Candau from San Ramon led all scorers with 5.
In the JV contest M-A fell to San Ramon 9-5.
