The Menlo-Atherton boys’ water polo team posted a 2-2 record at the CCS/NCS Tournament this past weekend hosted by St Francis and Campolindo. The tourney included the top 16 ranked teams in the CCS and the NCS divided into A and B divisions. The Bears (8-5) came away with an 11th-place finish in the tougher A group.

M-A opened on Friday against San Ramon Valley, which eventually lost the fifth-place match to Sacred Heart by a goal, and came up on the short end of a 12-8 score. San Ramon scored six times in the first quarter to jump out to an early lead. The Bears played them tough the rest of the way but could not close the gap. Max Wilder led the way with 3 goals, 3 steals and 2 earned ejections. Graham McClelland added 2 goals and 2 earned ejections for M-A. Junior goalie Alex Gow made 9 saves.

In the Friday evening match, the Bears fired on all cylinders as eight players found the back of the cage in a lopsided 15-7 win over Alhambra. Sophomores Zach Deal and Morgan Olson-Fabbro led the way with 3 tallies each and senior Nick Henze had 3 steals, 3 assists and 2 earned ejections.

Saturday morning saw M-A traveling to Moraga for an 8 a.m. game against Las Lomas, whose stifling defense kept Wilder scoreless and held senior Graham McClelland to a single goal as the Bears succumbed, 9-4. M-A didn’t help themselves by committing three 5-meter penalties, all of which were converted to scores. Goalkeeper Gow posted 3 steals to go along with 9 blocked shots.

In the final match, M-A controlled Serra on route to a 9-6 victory. Two weeks earlier the Bears squeaked out a 3-2 win over the Padres. Gow was dominant in the cage with 12 blocked shots and Deal led the offense with 3 goals, including a stellar play on a crisp pass from Wilder. Henze, Olson-Fabbro and Wilder added 2 scores each to round out the scoring. The Bears are now 8-5 on the season.

Coach Marco Palazzo’s boys open PAL Bay Division play against Burlingame at M-A’s Spieker pool on Wednesday. The varsity plays at 4 p.m.
