The Menlo-Atherton boys’ water polo team wrapped up the 13th Annual Scott Roche Memorial Tournament in style with a solid 12-5 victory over Bonita High School from LaVerne, CA. After dropping their opening match on Friday the Bears won the next three contests to claim ninth place overall. Nine different players found the back of the net with junior Max Wilder leading the way. Wilder posted all 3 of his tallies in the first period to open up a 3-0 gap over the Bearcats. Once again senior co-captain Graham McClelland led a stellar defensive effort with 4 steals to go with one goal. His younger brother, freshman Evan McClelland (known as Junior on the squad because of his sibling status and the presence of senior Evan Navarro on the team) scored twice, once from way outside. Seven other Bears notched solo goals; sophomores Zach Deal, a backhand from the hole position, Morgan Olson-Fabbro with an unusual lob shot from the hole and Harrison Holland-McCowan converted an excellent pass from Nick Henze, who led the team with 2 assists. Seniors Hunter Carmichael and Henze also added to the score and junior Roger Upton fired home his first goal of the season for the final score. Junior standout goalie Alex Gow stifled the Bonita offense, recording 8 saves. The victory pushes the Bears season record to 6-3. First year coach Marco Palazzo was pleased with his team’s progress over the course of the tournament stating “They are finally starting to talk to each other in the pool”. M-A returns to action next Friday at the St. Francis Tournament. First round pairings have not been announced.
