The Menlo-Atherton boys’ water polo team opened the 13th Annual Scott Roche Memorial Tournament with a tough 7-4 loss to Rio Americano High School of Sacramento. The Bears played it close for three periods, starting the final stanza deadlocked at 4-all but Rio earned a 5-meter penalty shot in the fourth to break the tie and went on to score two more unanswered goals to seal the victory. M-A was playing without standout senior Graham McClelland who had to serve a one game suspension as a result of a major penalty in last week’s Schmitt Memorial Tournament and he was clearly missed. Sophomore Zach Deal started in his place and lead Bear scorers with two tallies. Evan Navarro and Harrison Holland McCowan each added a score. Goalie Alex Gow made 5 steals to go with his 3 blocked shots while junior Max Wilder assisted on 2 of the goals. M-A came back in the night-cap to post a solid 6-2 victory over Palo Alto High School. Paly had lost an earlier match to defending tournament champion Cathedral Catholic of San Diego County. After a scoreless first period senior Evan Navarro opened the scoring with a long outside shot and Wilder earned and scored a 5-meter penalty to take a 2-0 lead into halftime. Paly came roaring back in the third with back to back scores on a power play and 5-meter penalty throw to tie it up at 2 all. But M-A senior Hunter Carmichael put the Bears in the lead for good on a power play goal off a pass from Wilder. Sophomore Zach Deal fired a slick backhand from the 2-meter position to put M-A up 4-2 after 3 quarters. Wilder scored his second goal when he made a steal and took it the length of the pool. Carmichael finished off the scoring when he took an outlet pass from goalie Alex Gow on a fast break and put it away for his second tally. Wilder and Navarro had 2 steals each and Gow made 12 saves, repeatedly repelling Paly shots. The Bears return to tournament action at the M-A Spieker pool at 11AM Saturday.
