The Palo Alto Babe Ruth 15-year-old all-stars saw their season end in a doubleheader loss to Woodland in the NorCal State Tournament on Thursday in Vallejo. Palo Alto, which came in undefeated and needed only to win one of a possible two games, ended up dropping an 11-7 contest in the opener and then a 9-6 decision in the challenge game.
Palo Alto had beaten Woodland, 16-13, on Tuesday night and had a day off while Woodland had to play Hayward on Wednesday. Despite having the extra day to rest its pitching staff, Palo Alto still failed to advance to the Pacific Southwest Regional in Ukiah.
Palo Alto committed five errors in the opening loss while suffering 14 strikeouts and being out-hit 16-6. The game was tied at 7 entering the top of the seventh before Woodland scored four times. Palo Alto loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but managed a single run while leaving the bases loaded at game's end.
In the winner-take-all challenge game, Palo Alto battled from behind and tied the score at 7 when a fly ball was dropped in right field for an error, allowing two Palo Alto runners to score. Palo Alto, however, gave up a two-run triple in the top of the seventh and the season was over.
