Second-seeded Old Pro knocked defending champion and top-seeded Alhouse out of the Palo Alto Little League City (Majors) Tournament with an 8-3 victory in the consolation finals on Thursday at Hoover Park. Old Pro advances to Saturday's championship game at Middlefield Ballpark at 2 p.m. A challenge game, if necessary, will be played Sunday (3:30 p.m.), also at Middlefield.
After falling behind by 3-1 after just 1 1/2 innings, Old Pro struck for three runs in the bottom of the second to retake the lead for good at 4-3. Ole Erickson led off with a single and Tench Coxe followed with another single. Itai Palmon doubled home Erickson and Daniel Douty grounded out to score Coxe and tie the game. Justin Hull then lofted a popup that the Alhouse first baseman caught in foul territory. Palmon tagged up and scored when the first baseman turned his back after making the catch. That held up for the deciding run.
Old Pro scored twice more in the third when pinch-hitter Eli Sorensen blooped a single over the second baseman's head to score Jai Correa, who had gotten aboard on a fielder's choice. Coxe then lofted a sacrifice fly to score Henry Hughes, who had doubled. Hughes hit a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth. Jonathan Davis led a 13-hit attack with a double and two singles for Old Pro.
Alhouse managed just two hits, both off Correa, the winning pitcher. He was relieved in the third by Zeke Coxe, who retired eight straight batters before an error ended the string of outs in the sixth. He retired nine of 10 before Hull came in to get the last hitter, sending Old Pro to the title game.
