The Stanford women's lacrosse team led for all but 13:35 of its first appearance in the NCAA tournament since 2006, losing to host James Madison, 9-8, in the first round Saturday.

The Cardinal (15-6) called a timeout with 18 seconds remaining to set up a possible tying goal. Sarah Flynn's last ditch attempt sailed wide.

Stanford completed one of its most successful seasons, winning the NCAA Play-In game last weekend to qualify for the Sweet Sixteen.

Catherine Swanson and Claire Hubbard each scored a goal to give Stanford a 2-0 lead, establishing a presence from the opening draw.

Stanford led at halftime, 7-4.
