Senior Jamin Ball rallied from a first-set loss to pull out a 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 6-1 victory over John Lamble and lift the Menlo School boys’ tennis team to a thrilling 4-3 victory in the championship match of the Central Coast Section Team Tournament on Friday at Courtside Club in Los Gatos. Top-seeded Menlo kept its perfect season intact at 24-0 while No. 2-seeded Saratoga fell to 22-3, with all three losses coming to the Knights.

Menlo’s triumph was its ninth CCS title, tying Gunn for the most in section history. It didn’t come easy. The Knights trailed 3-2 with the No. 3 doubles match going to a third set and Ball battling to win the second set. When Menlo’s Jonathan Katzman and Brian Peltz finished off their 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory to even the match at 3, all eyes turned to Ball, one of only three Menlo seniors playing on Friday.

Ball not only overcame illness that forced him to default his match in Wednesday’s 6-1 semifinal win over Palo Alto, but he had to beat his longtime friend and USTA doubles partner to keep his team’s perfect season intact heading into the NorCal Championships, May 21-22 in Oakley.

“We’ve been playing together since we were 13,” Ball explained. “So, this makes it even sweeter.”
