Palo Alto held a 14-point lead with five events remaining, but the Vikings couldn't hold on and wound up finishing second to defending champion Mountain View at the SCVAL De Anza Division Track and Field Championships on Thursday at Palo Alto High. The Spartans used a one-two finish in the 200 to virtually wrap up the title, finishing with 132 points. Garrett Rowe made Paly's upset attempt even tougher when he pulled away from Gunn's Paul Summers to win the 3200. The Spartans then nailed down the team title by winning the 1600 relay.

Palo Alto finished second with 103 points, due in part to the outstanding individual performance of junior Maurice Williams. He opened the meet with a leg on the 400 relay team that finished second to Mountain View (43.84) in 43.87. Williams then won the 100 in a personal best of 10.99, won the long jump at 20-9 and captured the triple jump with a personal best of 44-5 1/2. Paly senior Philip MacQuitty won a solid double by taking the 1600 in 4:19.60 before coming back to win the 800 in 1:57.94. Both wins were important as MacQuitty held off Mountain View's Chris Wells in both races. Bennie Williams added a victory in the high jump for Paly, winning at 6-4 to equal his season best.

Next up for the top finishers will be the SCVAL Qualifier at Los Gatos High on May 14.
