The Palo Alto girls’ soccer team will have to keep its fingers crossed when the Central Coast Section seeding meeting is held on Saturday. The Vikings’ chances of making the postseason are slim at best.
Once season after reaching the CCS Division I title match, the Vikings are barely a .500 team after suffering a 3-2 loss to visiting Mountain View in a SCVAL De Anza Division regular-season finale for Paly on Tuesday. The Vikings are 5-6-1 in league (8-8-2) and likely out of the section playoffs.
Palo Alto did grab a 1-0 lead against the Spartans when, in the 17th minute, senior Maeve Stewart intercepted a partial clear from a Mountain View player just inside the box. She touched the ball to open space and drilled a right-footed shot hard into the upper left corner.
Mountain View countered on a penalty kick in the 30th minute by junior Kirsten Belinsky. That deadlocked the match, 1-1, at halftime.
In the 58th minute, Paly senior Erika Hoglund gained possession at the 35 yard line. She dribbled by three players and shot hard and low, just inside the left post to make it a 2-1 match. Once again, the Spartans countered just a minute later (the 59th minute), when junior Lizzy Browne intercepted a Paly pass at the top of the box and one-touched it to senior Sophia Raefsky, who buried a nice shot into the back of the net.
Mountain View scored the winning goal in the 82nd minute (stoppage time), as the Spartans took advantage of a high deflected clear from Paly’s back line and Raefsky collected it near the top of the penalty area, passed it to Victoria Hayward, who drilled it home just in time for the game-winner.
