Palo Alto made its final tuneup for Saturday's SCVAL Championships a good one by pinning a 38-28 wrestling defeat on visiting Gunn in a SCVAL De Anza Division dual meet on Thursday night. Both Gunn and Palo Alto will compete at the league finals at the old Blackford High in San Jose (10 a.m.), where the top qualifiers advance to the Central Coast Section championships.

Palo Alto's AJ Castillo pinned Gunn's Jake Cherry at 4:31 to win the 285-pound division and give the Vikings a 25-16 lead. The 103-pound match followed with Paly freshman Jordan Smith taking an 11-2 major decision over Gunn's Chris Bennett, giving the Vikings enough points to win. The match was officially over when Palo Alto won by forfeit at 119 pounds.
