The Priory girls' soccer team kept its title hopes alive in the West Bay Athletic League (Foothill Division) with a 3-1 victory over host Castilleja on a rainy Thursday at the Mayfield Soccer Complex. Priory senior Massiel Castellanos scored all three goals as the Panthers improved to 5-1-2 in league (7-5-6 overall) and moved to within two points of first-place Sacred Heart Prep.
Castilleja (3-4-1, 7-5-1) got on the scoreboard first in the 20th minute on a series of passes from Caitlin Colvin to Emily Mosbacher, who sent it back to Colvin. She then placed a perfect cross to Martha Harding for the goal. Five minutes later, Castellanos received a through ball from Alex Schnabel to even the score.
Early in the second half, senior Adriana Cortes lofted a beautiful pass over the defense and Castellanos again finished low into the far post for a 2-1 match. Ten minutes later, Alyson Perna took on defenders, and found Cortes on a counter attack. She again lofted a pass to Castellanos, who tapped it past keeper Allie May. Eugenia Jernick and Perna both had very strong second-half performances for Priory.
