Palo Alto took a positive step forward but continues to trail in its quest to break into the top three in the SCVAL De Anza Division girls’ soccer race. The Vikings handed host Gunn a 1-0 defeat on a rainy Thursday evening to improve to 4-3-1 in league (7-5-2 overall with 13 points. That, however, leaves Paly in fourth place behind Los Gatos (18 points), Monta Vista (17) and Mountain View (16) with four matches remaining. The Vikings need to finish in the top three to gain an automatic berth into the Central Coast Section playoffs.
For the second straight match, senior Maeve Stewart provided the only goal for the Vikings. In the 77th minute, Stewart penetrated the Gunn defense on a breakaaway, forced the keeper to commit and fired a shot that was blocked by the keeper. The shot rebounded to Paly senior Erika Hoglund and eventually found its way back to Stewart, who finished the play for the game-winner. Stewart scored late on Tuesday to earn a 1-1 tie with Monta Vista.
Palo Alto out-shot Gunn, 7-1, on the cold night that saw the inclement weather affect play.
“We need to learn how to close out games (ties or otherwise),” said Gunn coach Damian Cohen, whose team has suffered through nine straight winless matches. Gunn will visit Monta Vista on Tuesday while Palo Alto will host Homestead on Saturday (11 a.m.) in a match moved up from Feb. 18, when the Mustangs are on break.
