The Gunn boys’ soccer team moved into no worse than second place in the SCVAL De Anza Division with a 3-0 romp over host Palo Alto on Thursday. The Titans, who started the day in fourth place, improved to 5-3-1 in league (6-8-2 overall) for 16 points while the Vikings fell to 4-2-2 in league (7-4-5 overall) for 14 points.

The victory for Gunn avenged an earlier loss to Palo Alto this season and put the Titans in position once again to challenge for the division lead with three matches remaining. Palo Alto has four left to play.

It was another dreary, rainy day that saw strong winds affect play. Paly started against the wind and held Gunn off until a few minutes before the half. Gunn scored on a direct kick about 10 yards outside the box by Jorge Salazar. The half ended with Paly almost scoring the equalizer as a shot rattled around in front of the goal until it was cleared by a Gunn defender.

Paly had the wind in the second half and had several opportunities to score. With about 15 minutes left, Salazar fired a shot from 20 yards out and it was partially blocked, before going past the Paly keeper for a 2-0 match. The final score came in the last four minutes when Gunn received another direct kick outside the box. Sterling Hancock hit an untouchable shot into the upper left corner.
