Palo Alto's Jack Sakai finished third at 130 pounds and teammate AJ Castillo took eighth at 215 pounds to pace the Vikings' wrestling team to a 17th-place finish (out of 63 teams) at the annual Mid Cal Classic Invitational at Gilroy High during the weekend. Sakai, who scored 29 points, was seeded sixth in his division. He went 5-1, losing only to Anthony Linares of Oak Grove in the semifinals. Sakai defeated third-seeded Cameron Lane of Vacaville for third place, 7-5. Sakai also beat Lane in the quarterfinals, 5-2. Castillo went 3-3 in the two-day tourney, winning his first two matches by pin. Palo Alto also was represented by Nicholas Ortiz (114), Joey Christopherson (121), Matthew Waymouth (127), Skyler Felt (137), Gabe Landa (142), Ryan Oshima (147), Max Simon (154), Kalen Gan (162), Michael Cullen (173), Nate Velasquez (191) and Jose Tochez (287).
