Varsity Girls Soccer
Menlo 2, Castilleja 1
Date of competition: Thursday, January 21, 2010
After suffering a tough loss earlier in the week to first-place Sacred Heart Prep, the Menlo girls' soccer team knew it had to bounce back quickly or otherwise fall further behind in the competitive West Bay Athletic League (Foothill Division) race.
While the Knights didn't start off in the right direction in Thursday's match against host Castilleja, they turned things around in time to grab an important 2-1 victory on a cold, rainy day at the Mayfield Soccer Complex. Menlo improved to 2-1-1 in league (8-2-2 overall) to tie Priory for second place. Both teams, however, trail SHP by five points. Castilleja dropped to 2-2 in league (5-3 overall) and faces a tough match on Tuesday at Sacred Heart.
On a drizzly, cold day and playing on a slick, wet surface that affected play, host Castilleja took the lead midway through the first half on a hard near-post shot by sophomore Caitlin Colvin that beat Menlo freshman keeper Julia Dressel. That goal stood up for a 1-0 halftime lead.
Menlo struck back in the second minute of the second half when senior Katie Baum connected from close range off a pass from senior Elitah Petty. At the 20-minute mark, Baum scored again from 18 yards out on a high shot to the far post off an assist from senior Nicole Fasola.
