After Palo Alto suffered its first loss in 20 league games (over the past three years) to Los Altos on Tuesday, it was going to be interesting to see how the boys’ soccer team would fare against a very tough Mountain View team on Thursday in a key SCVAL De Anza Division match. As it turned out, the Vikings rebounded well with a 1-0 victory on a drizzly day.

The victory moved Palo Alto (3-1-1, 6-3-4) into sole possession of first place, thanks to Gunn's 1-0 loss to Los Gatos that left the Titans 3-2 in league play.

In the middle of the second half, Paly senior Spencer Sims took a pass from senior Jenner Fox pass and, taking on two Mountain View defenders, pushed a low shot past the diving Spartans’ keeper for the winning score. It was one of the few opportunities that Paly had on another rainy afternoon. The slick, wet surface seemed to affect Paly more than the very quick Mountain View.

The Spartans (2-2, 7-3-2) had a number of opportunities to score in the first half and controlled a good part of the half. They continued to control the pace during much of the second half while Paly senior keeper Scott Alexander made a couple of nice saves and Sammy Greene made two opportunistic clears to keep Paly in the game.

Fortunately for Palo Alto, its defense of Austin Smith, Nittai Malchin, Grant Shorin and Peter Laminette) played just well enough to clear most of the crosses and stop most of the shots on goal to set up Sims’ game-winning goal. After that, Paly went into a more defensive posture for the final 20 minutes as Mountain View continued to attack.
