It was a battle between two unbeaten teams when the Woodside and Menlo girls’ soccer squads met in a nonleague showdown on Saturday in Atherton. Only one streak remained alive, however, after Woodside pulled off a 1-0 triumph to remain unbeaten. Wildcats’ junior Caitlin Brandman flicked in a close-range shot off an assist from freshman Allison Gillespie at the 30-minute mark of the first half for the game’s only goal. The Knights had only four shots on goal while Woodside had 13. Menlo freshman Julia Dressel, nonetheless, was superb in goal while making 10 saves and keeping the Knights within striking distance. Seniors Sarah Swig and Mila Sheeline plus juniors Shannon Lacy and Elle Laub played particularly well for Menlo (6-1-1), which will open its West Bay Athletic League (Foothill Division) season on Tuesday against visiting Priory at 3 p.m.
